The Fiji Meat Industry Board (FMIB) has reached a significant milestone in strengthening Fiji’s food safety standards following the official handover of its Hazard Analysis Critical Control Point (HACCP) Australia Certification today.
Speaking at the handover ceremony in Nakasi this morning, Assistant Minister for Agriculture, Waterways and Sugar Industry, Honourable Inosi Kuridrani, congratulated the Board, management and staff for their dedication and commitment in achieving the internationally recognised certification.
Hon. Kuridrani said the certification reflected FMIB’s commitment to maintaining the highest food safety standards and reinforced Fiji’s reputation as a producer of safe, high-quality meat products.
“This certification is far more than the presentation of a certificate.
It is a recognition of commitment, discipline and continuous improvement in strengthening food safety standards within Fiji’s meat industry. It demonstrates that Fiji is capable of meeting internationally recognised food safety requirements while delivering quality products for consumers.”
He said HACCP certification provides a globally accepted framework for identifying and managing food safety risks throughout the production process, strengthening consumer confidence and positioning Fiji to access new regional and international markets.
He highlighted that the achievement directly supports the Agriculture Sector Strategic Development Plan 2024–2030, particularly in strengthening food safety and biosecurity systems, modernising agricultural value chains and improving export readiness.
Hon. Kuridrani also noted that the certification aligns with the priorities outlined in the 2026/2027 National Budget, which proposes continued investment in agricultural infrastructure, livestock development, food safety compliance and value-added industries.
“When we invest in standards, systems and people, we create confidence for investors, strengthen Fiji’s agricultural brand and unlock new economic opportunities. FMIB’s HACCP certification is clear evidence that these investments deliver measurable results,” explained Hon. Kuridrani.
He added the certification would deliver far-reaching benefits for the livestock industry by improving consumer confidence, providing farmers with reliable processing pathways and creating new opportunities for export growth and agri-tourism.
He also reaffirmed the Government’s commitment to strengthening the livestock sector through continued investment in animal health, biosecurity, meat inspection services, infrastructure development and capacity building.
While congratulating FMIB on the achievement, Hon. Kuridrani reminded stakeholders that HACCP certification marks the beginning of an ongoing commitment to maintaining international standards through regular monitoring, staff development and continuous improvement.
He encouraged all stakeholders within the livestock and meat industry to embrace internationally recognised best practices as Fiji continues building a resilient, competitive and sustainable livestock sector.
The Assistant Minister concluded by congratulating the FMIB Board of Directors, management and staff for their professionalism and leadership, expressing confidence that the certification will further strengthen Fiji’s meat industry and create new opportunities for growth in domestic, tourism and export markets.
